Reflecting on NAIDOC Week with Vogue Australia

Each year, NAIDOC Week offers an opportunity to pause, reflect and celebrate the strength, resilience and enduring cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year carries particular significance as we mark 50 Years of Deadly - a milestone that honours five decades of celebrating First Nations voices, achievements and community.

We are honoured that our founder and Creative Director Melissa Greenwood, was invited by Vogue Australia to join fellow First Nations creatives in relecting on what this year's theme means personally, creatively and culturally.

“As a Gumbaynggirr woman and second-generation survivor of the Stolen Generations, this year’s NAIDOC theme, 50 Years of Blak Excellence, resonates deeply with me. When I think about Blak Excellence, I don’t think about awards or recognition. I think about the strength of our Elders, the resilience of our communities and the generations who fought to ensure our cultures, languages and stories would survive.

Through Miimi & Jiinda, I see my role as carrying that legacy forward. Whether through art, fashion or storytelling, our work is about creating visibility, opportunity and connection. As a mother of three, I hope my children grow up knowing that culture is not something from the past. It is living, evolving and helping shape the future. To me, that is Blak Excellence.”
