The Inspiration Behind the Gawngaan Silk Slip Dress

One of the standout pieces in this collection is the Gawngaan Silk Slip Dress. This design draws its essence from my artwork, Gawnggan (Great Mother), which represents the creation of all that is. Gawnggan is our female hero ancestor on Gumbaynggirr Country, diving the seas, rivers, lakes and creeks as they exist today.

Through its earthy tones and intricate patterns, this artwork speaks to our innate connection to the land as Gumbaynggirr people. When translating the artwork onto silk fabric, I wanted to ensure it retained its deeper meaning.

The result is a dress that stands as a statement piece of wearable art, carrying the essence of our people — our resilience, strength, and love for family and community. Every time you wear it, you carry this story with you.

The Story Behind the Baridaman Cotton Dobby Slip Dress

Another piece close to my heart is the Baridaman Cotton Dobby Slip Dress, a sold out piece (re stocking in January) This design is my interpretation of the native pig face flower, a bush tucker plant that holds special memories for me.

As a child, I used to eat the fruit from the pig face flower with my family down at the Gaagal (beach) on my Gumbaynggirr homelands, and now I share this experience with my kids on the same Gaagal. The fruit it bears in the spring and summer months tastes like sweet and salty strawberries, and the flower itself is a beautiful bright fuchsia colour.

Through this dress, I wanted to share these memories. The design reflects the flower’s beauty and the connection it represents. Made with cotton dobby fabric, the dress’s textured surface mirrors the little flowers and the sand dunes. The Baridaman dress is versatile, meaningful, and very comfortable and breathable.
